For those who happen to be in London, sacredmediacow, an independent media collective at the SOAS Centre for Media and Film Studies, is presenting a talk of which the details are given below.

Forgotten Histories and the Making of History: The Camera Chronicles of Homai Vyarawalla

Early photojournalism in India both emerged from and was defined by the nationalist movement. While ‘western’ photographers like Margaret Bourke-White and Henri Cartier-Bresson have been better known in the history of Indian photography, iconic images of the birth of the new nation were also taken by several unsung chroniclers of the time. One of these was India’s first woman press photographer, Homai Vyarawalla, who is ninety-three today. Re-looking at her rich body of work spread over three decades of Indian history, this illustrated presentation will focus on ways in which her photographs both contributed to and departed from nationalist iconography.

The speaker Sabeena Gadihoke teaches Video and Television Production at the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia University, Delhi. She is also a documentary filmmaker and cameraperson and works on the history and culture of Indian Photography. Her book Camera Chronicles (Mapin, India) on the life and work of India’s first woman photojournalist, Homai Vyarawalla was released in 2006
