HYDERABAD: November seems to be a month for elections. Two different sets of
elections were held yesterday. Unlike the US elections, the University of
Hyderabad Students' Union election was a local affair, though not lacking in
its share of passion and controversy. Around 20 students from different
departments campaigned to become president, vice-president, general
secretary, joint secretary, cultural secretary and sports secretary.

As many as 2,268 of the approximately 3,500 students exercised their
franchise.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won the posts of president,
vice-president, general secretary and joint secretary by 35, 199, 26 and 136
votes respectively while the Students' Federation of India (SFI) captured
the post of cultural secretary by 92 votes.

Imlinichet Imchen, an independent, became sports secretary. The vote share
of the ABVP came down from last year when it had swept the union elections.

The election was not without its share of controversies. One controversy was
about the implementation of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations regarding
conduct of student union elections.

The Election Commission (EC), a university body consisting of 29 students,
released the election notification on October 21 and then realised that it
wasn't in conformity with the Lyngdoh recommendations. It, therefore, issued
a fresh notification on October 26 which resulted in the disqualification of
two candidates for being overaged.

The Lyngdoh report recommends barring students over 28 years. Says an SFI
worker, "The EC raised the Lyngdoh issue two days before the polls were to
be held which caused a confusion." Another controversy was about voter
inducement. It is alleged that an ex-president of the National Students'
Union of India (NSUI) -- the student wing of the Congress party -- was
caught ''red-handed with diaries and shoes meant for distribution among
students''. Someone present at the place where the incident occured whipped
out a cell phone, made a video and uploaded it on Youtube. NSUI president,
Shivaji, denied the charge saying, "The material was given to us by the
Gandhi Peace-keeping Foundation for distribution much before the
elections.''
