[Reader-list] HARAM

Dear Nazneen,

I suggest that we all write in suggestions of what can be 'shared
rules' of conversation. What you say is true - there is no way to
keep people out. Nor is that really of interest. The more important
thing is to be able to - together, all the members of the list - be
able to create a public space of dialogue and engagement. One can,
and has, requested people not to flame, to maintain civility, to
respect the idea of a public conversation and not reduce a thread to
one liner remarks for quick victory, to not make ad hominem attacks,
and so on

However, that obviously hasn't worked. At an earlier occasion, some
list members were requested to take 2 weeks off from writing and let
others, and other conversations, enter while they took a breather,
but in due course of time the tone of the postings was the same again.

The bigger point i would like to raise - Is keeping a public forum a
space of conversation only the responsibility of the person/group who
provided the space for the forum? is it not a matter for all those in
the space to reflect and act on?

Maybe everyone can write in with ideas? suggestions?

best
M
