Two Footage Films, or how to make use of a footage archive.

CAMP continues its winter season of screenings exploring footage both
within and outside the usual capsule of "the film".  All screenings at
CAMP roof, starting at 6:30 pm

This Saturday, December 18th, 2010

1. Domestic Tourism II
Maha Maamoun, 2009
60 minutes.

2. Workers Leaving the Factory
Harun Farocki, 1995

36 minutes.

Both of these films begin with a premise that sounds like a google
search: to use scenes depicting a) the pyramids and b) workers leaving
the factory. But Maha Mamoun's film, Domestic Tourism II produces
effects far more politically and psychologically diverse that one would
imagine by reading the premise alone. The "keyword" is neither the
whole story, nor worthless, in our encounter with the surprising
archive.

Haroun Farocki's film "Workers Leaving The Factory" has been exhibited
in different formats since 1995, including as a multi-monitor
installation, 'Workers Leaving the Factory in Eleven Decades' (2006).
Beginning with the iconic 1805 shot, "Workers Leaving the Lumiere
Factory in Lyon", It brings together scenes that may be only incidental
to a films narrative, but in another assemblage such as here, produce a
different set of identifications. We will screen both the film and a
selection of clips from the installation with some addendum from Hindi
cinema.

Meanwhile...

Jan Gerber, Sebastian Lutgert (0x2620.org) and Ashok Sukumaran (CAMP),
co-initiators of Pad.ma, initiate "Problems of Translation" a public
discussion on the nature of translations between art and art's archive,
technology and art history, software and painting, and digital and
analog objects, at the Asia Art Archive, Thursday December 16, 2010.
