On Earth As in Heaven is conceived as an epigrammatic annotation, or speculative sequel, to J.G. Ballard’s novel on dystopic shopping – “Kingdom Come”. The title is sourced from the phrase On Earth as in Heaven that comes after the words, “Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be Done” in the Lord’s Prayer.
The work consists of layered découpé acrylic that uses the following phrase:
MONEY TALKS BUT DOES NOT REMEMBER
but in its realisation can read also as:
MONEY TALKS NOT
BUT DOES REMEMBER
The work gestures to Ballard’s despair at the consequences of the ubiquity of the oblivion induced by consumerism in a social milieu, where the most profound spiritual experiences are available to be had mainly at a discount sale at a shopping mall.
